THE 39 STEPS
Sam was the Director for The 39 Steps, the inaugural production for Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway, Long Island. For this production, Sam received the 2021 BroadwayWorld regional award for "Best Director of a Play"
TRACES
As part of his artist-in-residence period at Queens College Sam was Co-Director TRACES which was a source-based play exploring immigrant life in Queens over 100 years and how several families lived through different public health crises. This production appeared as a Mainstage at the Goldstein Theater at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts and was twice recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts.
STRONGBOX IN THE PARK
Sam served as one of three creative directors for Strongbox in the Park a one act play festival produced by Strongbox Theater. He was on the selection committee for the plays, oversaw the general vision of the festival, and was the Director or Co-Director for three of the eight pieces.
AT THE BARRICADES
Along with James Clements, Sam is the Co-Writer of At the Barricades a new piece of source-based experimental theater that examines the lives of volunteers who went to fight Fascism during the Spanish Civil War. The piece was presented as a staged exploration at Brooklyn Art Haus in 2023 and will be developed over the next year with a planned premiere in the Spring of 2025.
SOURCES OF LIGHT OTHER THAN THE SUN
Sources... is a source-based play set in the trenches of World War I exploring themes of grief, solitude, and PTSD. Set in an underground bunker on the Western Front, each scene in this historical drama examines the character's experiences using only one light source. Called "heartbreaking ....complex...and thought-provoking" by Theatre Is Easy, Sam's play has had production in NYC at the Hudson Guild Theater and HERE and was turned into a radio play by the Cleveland Radio Players.
UNTITLED SHAPE SHOW
Sam is the creator and book writer for Untitled Shape Show. With Music by Will Davis, this piece of theater for young audiences explores themes of stress, bullying, and growing up while using non-gendered shapes to accommodate actors and audience members of all identities. This musical has toured to New York, Toronto, and Sam's hometown of Providence, RI.
